"Take the Field"
Capital Campaign 2010
Background
The Wildcat Marching Band is an important and visible representative of the University of Kentucky. In 2008 alone, the band performed at 7 home football games, 5 away games (including a full band performance at the University of Louisville), the 50th AutoZone Liberty Bowl, 13 pep rallies, the UK Homecoming parade, the annual Band Spectacular concert, and the opening ceremonies of the 37th Ryder Cup international golf matches.
The conclusion of the 2008 football season marked the fifteenth season that the then-current marching band uniforms had been in service. As the average life of a college marching band uniform is seven to ten years, and as the uniforms had been in constant need of repair, the University Bands decided to purchase 300 replacement uniforms for the fall 2009 season. (Although the band currently numbers just over 200 members, a size run of 300 uniforms was required in order to accommodate a range of sizes and body types.)
When conceptualizing the new uniform, an attempt was made to capture the look and feel of a traditional college marching band uniform, while still possessing a contemporary forward-thinking design that would remain in style for the next decade. In addition, the increased visibility of the band through national television coverage, regular appearances at post-season bowl games, performances on the road at Southeastern Conference football games and other performances throughout the community have necessitated a stronger “branding” than the previous uniform provided.
Cost
The new uniforms have an approximate cost of $470 each:
The University Bands have paid for the new uniforms out of our operating budget. Given the large expense of new uniforms (almost $120,000), and the 17% budget cut the UK Bands sustained for the 2009-2010 academic year, this was a major expenditure which has severely impacted other UK Bands programs and projects. However, the old uniforms were simply too old and too worn out to continue to use. Now we need your help!
How can you help?
We are seeking to subsidize the cost of the new uniforms through a variety of sources, including the University, University Athletics, and individual support of alumni and supporters. We have received two individual gifts of $10,000 each, and numerous individual contributions totaling almost $5,000 more. While we are on our way, we still have a way to go. Please consider helping with a contribution to the UK Athletic Band Development Fund. All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Gifts can be sent to:
